Ensuring that Al tools across UW Medicine are rigorously evaluated, responsibly deployed and effectively used — navigating the promise and the complexities with intention.

Health Services

Driving innovative solutions to UW Medicine’s most pressing challenges – advancing our mission to improve the health of the public through equitable, high quality care.

Ventures

(Co)developing solutions and exploring responsible data partnerships that create new revenue streams for UW Medicine – contributing to a financially sustainable future.

UW Medicine is the largest integrated clinical, research and learning health system in the Pacific Northwest. More than 33,000 healthcare professionals, researchers and educators work together at UW Medicine with a single mission: to improve the health of the public. Our faculty, staff, students and trainees work in a family of organizations that includes Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, UW Medicine Primary Care, UW Physicians, Airlift Northwest and Fred Hutch Cancer Center. With 48,000+ inpatient admissions and 2.6 million outpatient visits in 2025 and a reach spanning five states, UW Medicine is poised to shape the future of healthcare for all people, across rural and urban populations and the full continuum of care.

The UW School of Medicine combines world-class research and training with a deep commitment to primary care and rural health. The School of Medicine is second in the nation in total federal research grants and contracts with $1.1 billion in total revenue, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Our internationally acclaimed graduate and postdoctoral training programs prepare students to advance science as members of an inclusive research community. We have six Nobel laureates among our past and present faculty.

As part of the wider University of Washington, we have access to world class expertise in critical domains like computer science, engineering, health sciences and more. This unique ecosystem also includes trailblazing centers and institutes with regional, national and global impact, such as the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the Institute for Protein Design, the Institute for Medical Data Science, the Kren Engineering in Medicine Initiative, the eScience Institute and the Global Innovation Exchange, to name a few. We are proud to partner with the broader community to shape the future of medicine, from start-ups to global tech leaders to companies that create and fund new businesses.

Through a mix of external solutions and in-house innovations, we’re using emerging technology to deliver high-quality, equitable care, support our workforce and drive the next generation of healthcare.

Documentation that keeps up

We are expanding our use of an ambient AI scribe tool across all ambulatory and emergency departments, enabling more face-to-face time between clinicians and patients and reducing the documentation burden.

Expanding safety nets
Missed imaging follow-ups can delay diagnoses and cause patient harm. We use generative AI to extract follow-up recommendations from radiology reports, ensuring critical care steps are actionable.

Supporting our workforce
We created an in-house platform that gives the UW Medicine community ability to access models (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic) securely using sensitive data, including protected health information, to support our workforce across the clinical, learning and research environments.
